Join children’s author Carol Trembath to learn about her experience writing children’s books, Water Walkers Series: Water Walkers, Stepping Stones, and Ripples and Waves. These beautifully written and illustrated books are told from the perspective of an Ojibway girl whose family members are walking around the Great Lakes to raise awareness about the harm being done to our fresh waters. The Water Walkers series is a tribute to the many Native People who have dedicated themselves to walking 19,500 miles around each of the Great Lakes, rivers, and waterways to draw attention to the condition of the water and responsible usage.
Hosted by Thunder Bay Arts and the Alpha Xi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Carol Trembath will spend three days working with third, fourth and fifth graders of six elementary schools in Alpena, Alcona and Presque Isle Counties. A special community reception and her presentation at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center will be the culmination of her visit to northeast Michigan. She will share her inspiration for writing the Water Walkers Series, her experience researching for the books, and highlights from working with local children over the past three days.
Alpena educators who heard Trembath speak at a state gathering of Delta Kappa Gamma Society on Mackinac Island were so impressed that they raised money to purchase sets of her books for area elementary schools. With support from Thunder Bay Arts, they are able to bring the author to the Alpena area on October 15, 16 and 17 to help local children learn how they, too, can serve as stewards of our Great Lakes.
The lessons shared in Trembath’s books are an excellent complement to the ongoing educational programs provided to area schools by the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS) in partnership with the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative. The Friends of TBNMS are excited to co-host a reception with Thunder Bay Arts, Alpha Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Trembath at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. A presentation by the author will follow the reception. She will be available to sign her books after her presentation. The Water Walkers Series will be available for sale in the Sanctuary Store as well.
Born and raised in the Great Lakes State of Michigan, Carol Trembath has made protecting our water through education her lifelong focus and passion. She has been a teacher, librarian, and media specialist for 28 years. She has a master’s degree in Education from Wayne State University in Library and Information Science, and a master’s degree in Education Technology from Michigan State University. She also has a bachelor’s degree in English from Western Michigan University. Her hope is that readers of her books will become more aware of Native teachings and become involved in recycling and protecting the environment. Her books have won several prestigious awards.
